YOU CAN’T OVERPOWER YOUR LUST

Remember the apostle Paul’s words in Romans 7? The stuff about doing things he didn’t want to do and not doing things he wanted to do? If a guy like Paul couldn’t overpower his compulsive sin by himself, it would be pretty arrogant for us to think we can. Especially when our entire culture seems geared to keeping sex on our brains 24-7.

Here’s a for instance. Let’s say tomorrow morning you decide to try to make it through the entire day without once lusting after a female. Th ink about the erotic minefield you’d have to make your way through: the bikini-wearing girl on the billboard on the way to school, the hot substitute teacher you can’t keep your eyes off of; the guy next to you in English lit. who wants to tell you how far he got with one of the cheerleaders, the magazine rack at the convenience store, the half-naked female characters on your favorite TV shows—plus the hundreds of other sexual temptations that will be screaming for your attention throughout the day.

You don’t have to go looking for sexual temptation; it’s everywhere. That’s why you can’t control your lust by yourself. You’re hopelessly outnumbered on your own.

I remember a friend once told me with a straight face, “I’ll never have a problem with sexual lust.”

I looked at him and said, “You’re absolutely amazing. If that’s true, you’re stronger than Samson, godlier than David, and wiser than Solomon.”

He sat down and stared at me for a half minute without uttering a word. And then he said, “I never thought of it like that.”

I’ll guarantee you that if Samson, David, and Solomon were here, they’d all say, “You can’t defeat your lust alone!”
